Position: Merchant Account Underwriter
Location: Irving, TX
Reporting to: Manager of Underwriting
Compensation: $18 - $23 per hour
Gather Resources seeks an intuitive Underwriter to join their client's growing team in Irving, TX. Our client offers the latest technology in credit card processing, point-of-sale equipment, advanced security solutions, and integrated payments.
As an Underwriter, this candidate will review and analyze merchant applications to qualify their creditworthiness. Utilize existing tools and procedures and follow appropriate credit policies and guidelines to mitigate financial and reputational risk exposures.
Key Underwriting Functions
Review merchant applications using different Underwriting tools. Gather all information required to make a comprehensive assessment of a merchant’s creditworthiness, including credit reports, TIN/OFAC checks, identity theft, bank account, and address verification
Work with partners to ensure compliance with various industry requirements
Work closely with the Underwriting departments of our banks to ensure timely approval of merchant accounts
Answer internal and external inquiries concerning Underwriting issues
Prepare monthly reporting required by partner banks on the performance of the credit card processing portfolio
Keep ISOs up to date on the status of their applications. Advocate on ISO’s behalf to get credit card processing deals approved
Audit of auto-approvals
Any other tasks as assigned
Communicate Actions and Outcomes
Place and receive phone calls to and from independent sales organizations (ISOs) and merchants to obtain necessary information
Notify the referring ISO/Agent of any special requirements for approving a credit card processing agreement
Provide excellent service to all constituents through proactive and ongoing communication during the life cycle of each merchant account
Skills Required
Strong deductive reasoning skills; can infer the complete picture using information gathered from multiple sources
Able to read and fully understand Personal and Business Credit Reports to assess a merchant’s financial condition and wherewithal to handle the obligations of a merchant credit card processing account
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
Enjoys identifying patterns or recognizing aberrations; likes to get to the bottom of the story indicated by the clues they surface
Takes calculated risks and learns from mistakes
Speaks in a clear, poised, and convincing manner
Writes in a professional style that remains succinct, polite, and on-point. Conveys difficult news compassionately in support of building long-term relationships with our merchants and ISOs
Demonstrates accuracy with particular attention to detail in a work setting that requires effective time-management skills and strict adherence to deadlines
Experience and Education
Minimum of 3 years prior experience in a Credit Underwriting role, preferably within the payment card industry
Knowledge of TSYS, Cynergy, and First Data platforms preferred
Strong analytical skills
Good business sense
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
